Seaside, Monterey County
Seaside was laid out in 1887 by John Roberts, a physician, and grew up beside Fort Ord, the Army post that trained hundreds of thousands of soldiers between 1917 and 1994. Much of the old base now lies within the city, including the campus of Cal State Monterey Bay and two golf courses first built for the troops. Seaside incorporated in 1954.
